Over the years I have learned a lot as to what all goes into running a photography business and why clients choose the photographers they do. There are so many incredible, talented photographers out there with massive amounts of creativity. So, there is a lot of research to do when making a decision as to who the right photographer is for you.
After various conversations with friends and past clients, I decided to put together a list of three of the most important things (in my opinion) when choosing a photographer. Whether you are selecting someone to capture your wedding day or a portrait session, it is important to take a few things into consideration. My hope is that you find this helpful and thought provoking.
I think style is probably one of the most important things when choosing a photographer. You will want to love the photographic style of the photographer and their ability to capture you in the best way possible. It is so important to check out the photographer's portfolio via their website, Facebook or other social media outlets to familiarize yourself with their work and experience. But there is more to selecting a photographer than solely based on style. There are more factors such as price. You could LOVE the photographic style of a certain photographer, but that same photographer may be out of your budget. So with that said, I give you my second point to consider when choosing a photographer.
2.) Package Pricing
So, it is not really about the price itself but what are you getting for the price? Does the photographer give you a disc and print release? Or do you have to pay an extra large fee to obtain that? How many images does the photographer give you? How many hours of coverage are you getting? If it is for your wedding day, is there an engagement session as well? Or is that separate? Are you only able to purchase prints from the photographer or do they provide digital images? I think in today's society, people are sharing so much of their lives on social media with their friends and family. In my opinion, it is so important to give clients their images for two reasons. One, being that these are their photos. My job is to document these moments for my clients so that they can remember them forever. The second is, people want to share their images with friends and family on social media sites. By giving them their images, this makes it super easy to do so.
The other thing to go along with this factor is, considering how long it takes to get your photos back. I have friends who didn't get their wedding photos back for six months. SIX MONTHS. My photographer took 4-6 weeks maybe in getting us our wedding images and I remember how anxious I was to get them. So, to me, six months sounds like an eternity. But hey! To each their own. As long as your photographer has communicated that timeline to you and you are down with that, then it's all gravy! Everyone works differently and everyone has different work loads but it is important to know that information up front so that you aren't disappointed when you are waiting to get your photos back. This brings me to my next point to consider when choosing the right photographer for you.
3.) The Personality of The Photographer
Point number three is a big one. I have heard people say that the person taking the photos is just as important as the photographs themselves. Why? Because you want someone who is easy to work with, easy to get ahold of, someone who communicates well the structure of the day, the timeline of events, who is flexible, nice (obviously), and someone who makes you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Besides that, you want someone who genuinely cares about you and your story. You will want someone who will bend over backwards to make sure your day is documented with elegance and precision. I love getting to know my clients and I love building relationships and making new friends! This is one of my favorite things. So, getting to know the personality of your photographer is super important when choosing who to go with.
I hope that you have found this post helpful. There are a number of things to consider when selecting the right photographer for you. It is just a matter of prioritizing things that are most important to you and your family. I have just highlighted three of the most important factors (in my opinion) through various conversations I have had with friends and past clients but I hope this helps get you thinking about what matters most to you because this is all about you and what you want for your day.
Thanks so much for reading!
